History and Background of Keds evolved from a merging of several rubber manufacturing companies called US Rubber in the late 1800s. Among them was the Goodyear Metallic Rubber Shoe Company. Charles Goodyear came up with the vulcanization technology used to meld rubber to cloth for a sturdier, more permanent bond. The various companies under US Rubber decided to consolidate the various brands each on produced and streamline them under one brand name- Keds. In the 1960's, US Rubber changed its name to Uniroyal and now manufactures a diverse array of rubber products. In 1979, the Stride Rite corporation acquired the Keds trademark from Uniroyal and Keds is now an integral part of America's wardrobe.
